We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join the Intensive Care Medicine team at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust. This is a 1-year fixed term Specialty Doctor role, in line with the Specialty Doctor Contract 2021.

The successful candidate will work within our on-call rotas covering Intensive Care. There will be the opportunity to cover elective surgical lists across the spectrum of clinical anaesthesia in a district general hospital during their time within the department.

The duties will include assisting with the care of the patients on the ITU and on-call work, including resuscitation calls. There is the possibility to undertake a full range of obstetric anaesthesia pre, intra and post-operative management of surgical patients within the anaesthesia team during the day, as the rota allows if the successful candidate also has qualifications within anaesthesia. This post will offer training opportunities as per the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine training guidance.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide expert clinical care in Critical Care Medicine, including managing a 10 bedded busy ICU and HDU department and on-call services.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions in hospital and community settings.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of integrated clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Supervise and support junior resident medical staff.
  • Engage in clinical audit, quality improvement, and research activities.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across departments and external partners.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The majority of your clinical time will be allocated to critical care unit under supervision of critical care consultant but will be required to participate in on-call rota with indirect supervision of consultant. In these circumstances the on-call critical care consultant will be available for advice and assistance if necessary. Experienced Doctors may occasionally be required to shadow, supervise and support new core trainees or specialty trainees as part of their on-call commitment but the on-call duties are for Intensive Care.

The post holder may be involved in teaching and supervision of other doctors and medical students, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

The post holder will be expected to engage in the departments full shift pattern with prospective cover for annual leave and study leave. The full-time post is for 10-13 PAs per week depending on the agreed job plan.

The department works very closely with department of Anaesthesia and shares on-call doctors from Anaesthesia department. All rotas are EWTD compliant in line with the 2016 Junior Doctor Contract and 2019 amendments to this contract.
